Caribbean Heritage Month

Thanks to Carnvial Fete-ish  for this post!   Just using our following to further what they've already done, spread the word on Caribbean Heritage Month.

How fantastic that Machel Montano will be performing at the White House on June 24th!  What a great honor and what a wonderful opportunity for Caribbean music and culture to be shared with our American family.

Excerpt:

"Caribbean Americans have prospered in every sector of our society and enhanced our national character while maintaining the multiethnic and multicultural traditions of their homelands.  They are doctors and lawyers, public servants and scientists, and athletes and service members.  Their successes inspire individuals in the United States and abroad, and we take pride in the contributions Caribbean Americans continue to make to the narrative of our Nation's progress.  Their achievements are borne of hard work and ambition, and my Administration is committed to creating pathways to prosperity that ensure future generations of Caribbean Americans, along with all Americans, are able to pursue and realize the American dream."

Baby Jumping Festival

Festival Travel Plans for June?

Where?                        Burgos, Spain
When?                         Sunday after Corpus Christi
Can I participate?         Yes, if you’re a baby!

Bizarre?  Why yes of course!  Spain is your one-stop-shop for some strange, yet intriguing festivals.  This festival is as old and it is odd; originating in the province of Castilla y Leon in northwest Spain since the 1620’s grown men don costumes in bright red and yellow and as the name implies of the festival implies, they jump over babies (real babies).

Why?  The men are dressed to personify the devil therefore evil follows them – of course.  By jumping over the babies the take the evil with them and it never touches the innocent babes, their souls are cleansed and all is well.  Caveat – only babies born in the previous 12 months leading up to the festival can benefit from this soul-cleansing-service.

Are adults spared? Nope.  These devils have in their possession whips, and they aren’t afraid to crack them behind unsuspecting spectators.

Want to go?  Contact the Burgos Tourism Office +34 947 20 31 25

Recent Developments:  Pope Benedict has recently requested that priests in Spain distance themselves from this festival since babies are obviously endangered and the recent death of an elderly gentleman has raised concerns.

Another one for the Calendar

The Arts & Multiculturalism Minister, Mr. Winston "Gypsy" Peters has said that a decision on whether or not there will be a Carnival slated for Tobago will be made by the end of the month.  Tobago pops off a handful of annual events; a much anticipated Jazz Festival, the annual Great Race competition, and more recently -Tobago Fest.  The talk of the town will be the October Carnival if it does indeed come to pass, Trinbagonians love their carnival and adding another one to the social calendar..well it's just one more excuse to lime and party hard!
